Regular visitors to these pages might recall that I recently posted an item calling upon the British government to take action to conserve 'Undershaw', a former home of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (see here).  I can now report that consideration is being given to a proposal to split this building into three properties thereby altering it beyond all recognition.   We have already lost a number of Conan Doyle's former homes including two in Edinburgh.  However, Undershaw is particularly special because it was built for Conan Doyle and it was also where he wrote some of his most enduring tales including 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' (1901).  My belief in the willingness of national politicians to do the right thing has been further eroded by events pertaining to the recent 'Expenses Scandal'.  However, I retain the hope that Waverley Borough Council will be more inclined to listen to public opinion and act in its best interests.  Hence, I would be grateful if visitors would take a few seconds to sign a new petition that seeks to secure protection for Undershaw (see here).  Thanks in anticipation of your support!
